So I organised a photo scavenger hunt around London for my fellow Reddit London Social Club members on Saturday which involved teams running around London to snap photos of esoteric and abstract ‘things’.
The premise is this: Teams are given item sheets with items of varying degrees of difficulty, they then have 5 hours to take as many of the items as they can, points are then arbitratily awarded based on whether or not the judges feel they have met the conditions and added up. However there are also items they can photgraph that will get them no points, if the judges deem them to be obvious. These ‘nullifiers’ zero out the points they may have got for that item. All pretty simple.
I was fairly hungover from the night before and wasn’t fully prepared, so nipped into the office to print of the team sheets and grab a PC to TV cable, before heading along to The Chandos bar near Trafalgar Square.
Unfortunately in the meetup thread I’d told people to go to 60 Chandos Lane which was a sandwich bar the next street over. Already a nightmare but eventually got everyone together, handed out the sheets and off they went at 12:00. I hung around for a bit before deciding to fill in the nullifiers on an actual sheet.
It was at this point that I realised that I’d given most teams two copies of the same sheet, instead of one of each! Apparently I don’t print multiple copies of things often enough to remember about the collate function and giving people two sheets off the top is simply giving them two sheets the same! Cue frantic running around London trying to catch the teams to give them whichever sheet they were missing. So much for relaxing at the pub for a few hours!
Really nice bar with a private area downstairs for us all with a TV and PA system, all good.
In terms of timing and number of items I think it went pretty well. Teams in general got around 70 – 75 of the 80 items on the sheets and all made it back for around 17:30 which was the end time.
Unfortunately the people meant to be helping me had all pulled out so I was just left to mark the entries and this took until around 20:00.
Scores were all around 100 – 125 out of 135 + stations, so around 150, and ultimately was quite a success.
The list is below for those of you who are keen to run your own photo scavenger hunt in London and want ideas. You can also see some of the pics in these Imgur albums.
